Train Travels: Volume 16 – Special: Merseyrail

To get to Liverpool, Chester and from there into North Wales, we regularly use the Merseyrail Network, which consists of 2 lines running all over the county of Merseyside, and into Lancashire and Cheshire. The lines are mainly centred around the underground stations in Liverpool City Centre such as Moorfields, Liverpool Central and Liverpool Lime Street, with the main spurs going off to Southport and Chester. Trains run every 3 minutes on most lines with the spurs running slightly less frequently such as to Ormskirk and Kirkby.

We mostly use the Northern Line into Liverpool:

Southport – Hunt’s Cross

It is the quickest and easiest way into Liverpool, and there is a standard type of train used on all the lines:

Class 507/508

These trains run all the seperate routes, and are unique in the UK, as they don’t run on any other lines. In fact the Merseyrail system only uses Merseyrail trains, no other train operators can run their trains on these tracks.

The various Merseyrail stations interchange with main line stations such as Liverpool Lime Street (For local, Manchester and London), Southport (For Manchester and Manchester Airport) and Chester (for North and South Wales), as well as Liverpool South Parkway for buses to Liverpool John Lennon International Airport. There are ferries to Ireland (Belfast and Dublin) and the Isle of Man available from the riverside in Liverpool and the port of Birkenhead across the river.
