As a treat, I am doing another update today. The week after Penrith, we took a visit to Lancaster, the historic county town of Lancashire. When we arrived, we got a bus over to Morecambe on the coast for the morning.
Status: City of Lancaster District, Lancashire, Town, England
Travel: Virgin Trains (Preston – Lancaster), Virgin Trains (Carlisle – Lancaster), Stagecoach (Lancaster – Morecambe)
Eating & Sleeping: N/A
Attractions: Morecambe Beach, Pier, Eric Morecambe Statue, Morecambe Promenade, Various Bird Sculptures, Morecambe Pier Lighthouse etc
One of the many bird sculptures. The interesting thing about the different sculptures is that they are all of different birds, so see how many you can spot if you ever visit.
This is the statue of legendary British comedian, Eric Morecambe, situated on the promenade.Together with his partner Ernie Wise, he formed half of the comedy duo “Morecambe & Wise”. He was born in Morecambe in 1926, and sadly passed away in 1984. His television shows were a huge hit in Britain and sold to other countries such as the USA and Canada.
The next photo is of Morecambe beach. It wasn’t the sunniest of days when we went but it is still very pleasant and when its sunny it is a good place for a day out. There is plenty to see if you walk down the promenade.
The final photo is a view back along the pier, with the lighthouse visible halfway back. It juts out quite far into the sea and made up of large lines of boulders. On a clear day you can see across to Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, as well as round to nearby Heysham where two of the UK’s nuclear plants are located.
Stay tuned for part 2 of our Morecambe/Lancaster day out, as I shall be posting it tomorrow afternoon!
